The theme of the evening was "Vitamins and Supplements." Neetu Agarwal called the meeting to order. John Checki led the business session this week in the absence of the President. Sherry Meyers led us with the invocation and pledge. In the business session, Sherry reiterated the call to pay dues and renew membership. Paul Carter gave an update on the membership drive and the contest. After the business session, Jim Wolff took over as Toastmaster of the evening. Therese Rockwell motivated us with her description of her times spent at the McDonald observatory and read a beautiful poem — "There is nothing that you need ..."
Table topics were led by Elizabeth Cook. The Word of the Day, chosen by Paul, was "infirm."
After the break, prepared speeches were given by Eric Dyson on "Vitamins for your Mind," Kathy Toler on "The Future of Medicine — Beware," Rosa Temengil on "The Good Old Days of Childhood," and Takashi Nishikawa on "Treat your Customer like a god." Eric announced the launch of his series "Must See Big D!" while Kathy warned us of the danger of genomic medicine. Rosa shocked us with the statistics on the number of tests young students had to take these days. Takashi used his speech to remind us how we as customers like and need to be treated. John Checki was general evaluator. Katherine Gean evaluated Eric, John Sessions evaluated Kathy, Ben Grubert evaluated Rosa, and Angelo Pereira evaluated Takashi.
Thereafter, reports were given by various toastmasters. Mike Weibel served as Parliamentarian, Paul Carter as Grammarian, Neetu Agarwal as Ah! Counter and Benjamin Vincent as timer/vote counter.
We had several guests at the meeting — Jennie Higgins and Annie Johnson. We hope to see these ladies back as members soon. Our area governor Debbie Allen was present as well. I noted that Annie mentioned that she would like to start a TM club for the Navaho Indian community and I remember the movie "Wind Talkers" featuring the unique language of the Navaho that was used as a military communication code.
The awards went to Mac Smith for "Best Table Topics," Eric Dyson for "Best Speaker," Angelo Pereira for "Best Evaluator," and Takashi for "Toastmaster of the Evening."
